100 Dachshunds Compete For Title Of “Fastest Wienie In The West” In 26th Annual Race.

A light brown wiener dog barks as they are held in the air by a smiling man. The dog is wearing a bright orange vest.

Each year for the past 26 years, the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals has posed an important question: Who is the fastest wienie in the west? In order to get the answer, dachshunds from all over are invited to compete in races held in Los Alamitos, California. This year’s competition brought in around 100 dachshunds and wiener dog mixes, all of which were ready to move their little legs as fast as possible!

To narrow down the competition, each pup has to complete 10 trial heats of 50 yards. Some are able to stay focused on their goal while others get distracted, either wandering off the course or simply sitting down before the race is over. No matter what, though, there is always one wiener winner in the end. This year, it was Beenie Von Weenie!

“I have the winner, Beenie Von Weenie!” Nicolee Leonard, owner of the newly-crowned champion said. “I’ve been coming every year. And he nailed it. He won a doghouse and $1,000. And the title, ‘The Fastest Wienie of the West!'”

This fantastically silly race isn’t just for laughs and prizes – each year, the competition raises money for the Seal Beach Animal Center. In doing so, they’ve raised around $300,000 since 1996!
