Brandi Smith was in the middle of a live interview when she got the chance to save a life.

Smith spotted a truck driver stuck in about 10 feet of water off a Houston highway yesterday – but was at a loss for what to do. The news crew had no boat of their own and every rescue number they called was overwhelmed with more urgent calls… but the truck driver would be in dire danger within hours.

In the video below, Smith spotted a sheriffs deputy truck hauling an airboat traveling down the highway on live TV. With no regard for her own safety, the young anchor darted out into the highway and flagged the truck down. Her quick thinking saved a life that day.

As the airboat approached the stranded trucker, Smith kept up the commentary, “Incredible kudos to these two sheriff’s deputies who are risking their lives in this deep water. I’m sure he’s very wet, very cold, very frightened,”she said.
After a few moments, the driver, identified as Robert, was set back on dry land.

Smith and her camera man, Mario, breathed a huge sigh of relief after the ordeal. Then spent the rest of their day covering the day’s events and keeping a lookout for the next Robert in need of rescue.

His rescue was just one of hundreds carried out on Sunday as emergency services raced around Houston in boats, trucks and helicopters responding to calls.
