“I was engaged when I met Alex. We originally met in the Emergency Room of a hospital, as I’m an ER nurse and Alex was a paramedic student. I thought he was attractive, but that’s as far as it went. I had been dating the person I was engaged to for 6 years. I moved to Pittsburgh to be with him and getting engaged seemed like the next logical step. However, I wasn’t really happy. Many of my friends were getting married at the time and I was so excited to help them plan their weddings, but when it came to planning mine, it was the last thing I wanted to do. My friends noticed that I wasn’t being myself and encouraged me to re-evaluate why I was getting married. With their support and the support of my family, I called off the wedding. A year later I was single when Alex came to the ER again with a patient. A co-worker mentioned that we would make a really cute couple. I wasn’t ready to get involved in anything serious and told Alex that when he asked me out. On our first date, he drove an hour to pick me up. After finding out that I loved haunted hayrides, he drove another hour to take me to the best one in the state. A year later, on a horse and carriage ride through Central Park, he proposed to me with a photo album of all our favorite pictures together. I’ve been with Alex only a fraction of the time I was with my ex, but am ten times happier. I’m more in love than I ever thought possible. I’m sharing my story in hopes to inspire others not to settle. If it doesn’t feel right and you’re just going through the motions, it’s not too late to make a change.
