Sheriff’s Office Makes Toddler A Deputy After He Saved His Mom’s Life

While making her family dinner, Shantell Woods started to feel dizzy. The mom of two made her way to the couch. Shantell, who lives with epilepsy, began to have a seizure and fell unconscious. Her 3-year-old son, Cody, knew something was wrong, and the sweet little guy called for help.

“I want to cry right now. He’s just my hero,” the proud mom told WXYZ.

Brilliant Cody grabbed his mom’s phone and held it to her face to unlock it. He then FaceTimed his mom’s friend, Kaya, for help.

The Friend Thought The Call Came From Shantell Woods

Kaya told WXYZ she expected to talk to Shantell, but heard Cody’s voice.

“Kaya, help mommy, help mommy,” Cody told his mother’s friend.

“It’s amazing,” Kaya said. “I was surprised, but happy he knew what to do.”

Cody’s actions didn’t surprise Shantell Woods. He’s seen her have medical emergencies in the past, so he knew he needed help.

“And he’s just a smart kid,” Shantell said.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department agreed. On October 14, they held a press conference to honor Cody for his incredible bravery. They made him a junior deputy just weeks before his fourth birthday.

“It’s a good reminder for all parents that you should talk to your kids if something happens, what would they do in an emergency?” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “Do they know how to dial 911, and only to dial in an emergency? And this young man figured it out… That’s the most important win of the day is that mom’s here.”

Shantell Woods thanked the sheriff’s office for recognizing her son. The sheriff gave her a sweet compliment, saying, “You’ve done a good job, Mom.”

He also told Cody that if he’s interested in a career as a first responder, he should apply.

“I’m not sure if he is quite of age, but we’re hiring,” he joked.
