Long before a tornado ever hits the ground, meteorologists work hard to give the people in its path a heads-up. Those extra minutes or even an hour to prepare can be, quite literally, lifesaving. That said, there are some people who actually want to witness the forming of a tornado right before their eyes. Storm chaser Brad Arnold is one of those people. He closely followed a severe storm in Madison, Alabama and, in doing so, managed to capture that very moment on camera.

Brad could tell that a tornado was likely forming soon after he saw so many power flashes. That term refers to the sparks of light caused by something electrical, like power lines, getting struck by lightning. Then a tornado forms — and it happens much faster than you might imagine it would. Witness this harrowing moment in the video below.

Fearless Storm Chaser Witnesses a Tornado Forming Right Before His Very Eyes in Alabama
“This storm season is already terrifying, but also… we’re getting some of the best tornado footage I’ve ever seen. Holy cow,” one commenter points out, another admitting, “I [got] nervous about him driving into it and I’m not even in the car.”
Reports later show that this particular tornado was an EF-2. At its height, it produced wind speeds of 125 mph. It managed to stay on the ground for a whopping 13 miles. Along its path, the powerful twister uprooted many trees and caused damage to several roofs.
This is far from the only breathtaking tornado footage storm chasers have captured this year. Another shocking example comes from a resident in Arkansas — he saw a small tornado transform in less than two minutes. Then there’s the mind-blowing aftermath of a massive tornado in Kentucky. The damage can be seen from far above.
