Retired boxer Musa Abdraim stepped up to save a young woman from a man with a knife and became a hero. He didn’t go to the airport that day to be a hero. Like many others, he was there to see off some relatives. The incident occurred at Almaty Airport on March 7, 2025.

When airport authorities asked a 67-year-old man for identification, he pulled a knife and took a young female security officer hostage. The suspect also stated he had a bomb in his bag. Thinking about nothing but the young girl, Musa stepped in, offering himself hostage for her release. Surprisingly, the suspect agreed to the exchange. Once the woman was clear, the boxer-turned-hero grabbed the knife, allowing security personnel to swoop in.
The suspect was in custody within seconds. Musa played down his intervention. He heard the girl scream and reacted. As the father of five and with his past in boxing, his only thought was, “What if it’s my daughter?” The father did what fathers do, even though it wasn’t his daughter.

The suspect faces up to 12 years in prison and remains in custody. The World Boxing Council (WBC) named Musa a “Hero of Humanity.” Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, announced that Musa will be awarded a state medal for his bravery.
The incident took less than one minute, from when he heard the scream until the suspect was in custody. A young woman can go home to her family thanks to Musa Abdraim’s quick thinking and heroic actions. Watching the video, you can see that Musa’s boxer speed and reactions are still intact. He may have retired from the ring, but his muscles still remember.
