Just two months ago, it looked like restaurant chain On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina would be a thing of the past. The Atlanta-based restaurant group filed for bankruptcy with more than $25 million in debt. The company shuttered nearly half it’s locations and pleaded with the court to break leases for vacant buildings. It seemed like only a matter of time before On The Border would be gone forever, but a Houston-based restaurant group just saved the day. According to a news release, Pappas Restaurants won a bid to acquire On The Border and plans to expand the brand.

On The Border’s New Owner Has Proven Success With Tex-Mex Restaurants
Pappas Restaurants owns and operates Pappasito’s Cantina, a brand known for its fajitas and margaritas. Acquiring On The Border seemed like a natural fit.
“We’re excited to welcome On The Border to the Pappas family,” Mike Rizzo, CEO of Pappas Restaurants, said in a release. “On The Border is a brand with deep heritage and loyal guests, and we see tremendous opportunity to invest in its future. Our shared Texas roots and passion for hospitality make this a natural fit.”
Pappas Restaurants plans to enhance the customer experience at On The Border by sticking to the brand’s roots and making improvements.
“The transition will be guided by a commitment to quality, hospitality, and the celebration of Tex-Mex cuisine,” the release notes.
In addition to Pappasito’s, Pappas Restaurants owns and operates Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, Pappas Bar-B-Q, Pappas Seafood House, Pappas Delta Blues Smokehouse, Pappas Burger, Pappas Little’s Oyster Bar, Dot Coffee Shop, and Pappas Bros. Steakhouse. The company also runs Pappas Catering and Pappas Delivery.
“The Pappas brothers are Houston natives with a passion for exciting, diverse, and delicious food. When they opened their first restaurant, Dot Coffee Shop, they set out to serve only the highest quality product and ensure that every Guest that walks through our doors feels like family. Since then, the Pappas Restaurant family has grown. We’ve opened more than 100 restaurants and become a leader in the hospitality industry,” the company’s website boasts.
