It’s that time of year again. Millions of people head to the grocery store to fill their carts with traditional Thanksgiving foods. Families will spend days preparing a glorious feast, then plop down in front of the TV for football and a nap. It’s a very American thing to do, as is the annual presidential turkey pardon. This year, President Donald Trump stood outside the White House and officially pardoned this year’s turkeys, Gobble and Waddle, ABC News reported.

“Gobble, I just want to tell you, it’s very important — you are hereby, unconditionally pardoned,” President Trump declared.
The Turkey Pardon Has Been A Thanksgiving Tradition for Decades
According to the White House, the actual origin of the turkey pardon is unknown. Many argue that the tradition began with President Abraham Lincoln. Others give credit to President Harry S. Truman. While we don’t know exactly how it started, President John F. Kennedy pardoned the first turkey in public in 1963, and the tradition continues today.
