Petco To Close Dozens Of Stores By The End Of The Year

Petco

As retail continues to face declining sales, more and more companies are closing stores and restructuring in order to survive. For more than 60 years, Petco has been “Where the Pets Go.”  Owners rely on Petco for food, toys, supplies, and grooming needs. Boasting 1,4000 stores nationwide, even a retail giant like Petco is trimming the fat, so to speak. At the end of August 2025, Petco released its second-quarter financial results, and things looked promising.

“For the second quarter, we once again delivered against our commitments, enabling us to raise our earnings outlook for the full year. The first half of this year established a solid foundation for our transformation as we continued to strengthen our economic model and improve retail operating fundamentals,” Joel Anderson, Petco’s Chief Executive Officer, shared.

Petco Intends To Close 25 Locations

While the business feels confident about its future, Petco will close 25 stores by the end of 2025, according to Newsweek. The company closed 25 in 2024 as well, so the number isn’t staggering.

But it’s not all bad news for Petco. The brand launched the “My Human” line for those pet-obsessed individuals who unabashedly adore their animals.

“Creating a completely unique human category at Petco was a no-brainer that’s deeply rooted in our brand’s essence,” Michael Romanko, Petco Chief Customer and Product Officer, shared in August. “No matter our lifestyle, the human-animal bond connects us all, and customers are looking for fun ways to show off and share that bond, especially for gifting moments.”
