Last year, we visited the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary to watch the young screech owl, Juno, as keepers showed him things he’d never seen before. This TikTok trend is still going strong, so this year we’re visiting Reptile Encounters. The program is the mobile unit of the Melbourne Zoo, serving to educate people about the reptiles and other animals indigenous to Australia.

They have recently taken in a young barking owl whom they have named Connor. Being young and new to the facility, the staff decided to show Connor some things he had never seen before. So far, the series has two parts. In Part One, Connor saw a large hermit crab, a “nope” fish, some crickets, and the fridge. Connor declared that the refrigerator had “literally nothing” and might be better suited to a bachelor.
Part one was so popular, the staff embarked on a second tour. The little owl seems to have a permanently “shocked” face, regardless of the items or areas he is shown. Riding on the gloved hand of a keeper, they headed off to explore.
Connor’s first introduction was to Penny, the Mary River turtle. Although the turtle elicited a wide-eyed response, that wasn’t impressive because that is Connor’s all-the-time face. Next was the fire extinguisher. That’s an important thing to know about. Although, with no opposable thumbs it won’t do the little owl much good. He can be a safety advisor though!

Connor got to meet Pebble Connor, and snakes Topdeck and Frank the Tank. They tried to teach him how to work the point of sale tablet. Next they went into the shed which had Connor dancing.
