Meet The Internet’s Favorite Giant Rodent: 10 Fun Facts About Capybaras

If you’ve ever wanted to cuddle a capybara, you’ll probably be jealous of my job! I run an animal education program called Dark Wings Wildlife, and Pumpkin the capybara is undoubtedly a fan favorite. My favorite part about Pumpkin – outside of the cuddles and belly scratching, of course – has to be how many fun facts I can teach people to deepen their appreciation for these unique creatures!

Without further ado, here are my ten favorite facts about capybaras!

1. They Make Noise

Capybaras might look quiet, but they are not! They communicate through a variety of vocalizations, including barks, whistles, and purrs.

Like many rodents, capybaras also make a unique noise called “bruxing” by grinding their teeth together. Bruxing is often associated with relaxation or contentment. So, the next time you hear a capybara making unusual noises, know they are simply expressing themselves.

2. They’re Wonderful Swimmers

Capybaras are perfectly adapted for a semi-aquatic lifestyle. With their webbed feet and streamlined bodies, they are excellent swimmers. In fact, they spend a significant amount of their time in the water, whether it’s to escape predators, regulate their body temperature, or forage for food.

3. They Can Sleep in the Water

Not only are capybaras fantastic swimmers, but they can also sleep while partially submerged in the water. They rest with only their noses and eyes above the water’s surface, keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings while enjoying a peaceful slumber.

4. Their Teeth Never Stop Growing

Like other rodents, capybaras have teeth that continuously grow throughout their lives. This growth is essential because their diet consists primarily of tough vegetation that requires constant chewing. Their front teeth, known as incisors, are powerful and sharp, allowing them to graze on coarse grasses easily.

5. They’re Herbivores

Capybaras are strictly herbivorous, meaning they only eat plant materials. Their diet mainly consists of aquatic plants, grasses, fruits, and tree bark. Their specialized digestive system allows them to extract maximum nutrients from their food.

You probably knew that capybaras are herbivores, but do you know what type of herbivore 🤔 there are two main types of herbivores: browsers & grazers! #capybara #asmr #capybaratiktok #babyanimals #4you #animalsoftiktok #animaltok #cute #cuteanimals #cutetok #fyp ♬ original sound – DarkWingsWildlife

6. They Eat Their Own Feces

While it may sound strange, capybaras engage in a behavior known as coprophagy, which involves consuming their own feces. Grasses are tough to digest! They can re-ingest partially digested plant material by consuming their feces, allowing for greater nutrient absorption.

7. They Have Several Predators, Including People!

Despite their large size, capybaras have several natural predators, including jaguars, anacondas, and caimans. However, their biggest threat comes from humans.

People hunt capybaras for their meat, skin, and fat in some regions of South America. They are also victims of habitat destruction, as humans destroy their natural habitats to make way for agriculture and urban development. Conservation efforts are crucial in protecting these gentle giants and ensuring their survival for future generations.

8. They’re Related to Guinea Pigs

Capybaras may resemble a cross between a hippo and a beaver, but they are more closely related to guinea pigs. Both capybaras and guinea pigs belong to the same family, Caviidae.

9. They Can Weigh As Much As You!

On average, adult capybaras can weigh between 77 and 146 pounds! However, some individuals can reach astonishing weights of up to 220 pounds.

10. Capybaras Are The World’s Largest Rodent

These charismatic animals hold the title of the world’s largest rodent! In addition to their imposing adult weight, they can grow up to 4.5 feet in length and stand about 2 feet tall at the shoulder!
