These aren’t just “normal” jellyfish, though: this bloom was starlight jellyfish. Because of a unique biological trait, you may hear these little animals called “night light” jellyfish. Starlight jellyfish are bioluminescent, giving them the ability to glow at night. They sting like any other jellyfish; they’re just more sparkly.
In another video, Megan uses a portion of the soundtrack of Dory from “Finding Nemo.” The voice clip is from the scene where Dory wants to name the jellyfish Squishy. As Dory touches a jellyfish and gets stung, Marlin yells to warn her. The scene Megan recorded on her GoPro was very reminiscent of the scene from the movie.
Megan edited and reposted the first video, adding more details in the caption. Their adventure began off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. When Megan started noticing the jellyfish bloom, she wanted an underwater view. Not having a selfie stick, she stuck her arm into the water holding her GoPro. Yeah, we cringed about that too. She had not realized how many jellyfish were in the water until she got home and edited the footage.
