Not everyone has fond memories with their grandparents. For Kiley, much of her childhood centers around her relationship with her grandfather. He taught her an appreciation of music with the Don McLean hit “American Pie.” He taught her to “be there in the moment” with cuddles, unconditional love, and support. And when you need a little smile, a grandpa milkshake might be unexpectedly arriving on your doorstep.

It’s difficult to see through the video’s caption, but Kiley is holding back a lot of emotion. After saying she wanted a milkshake, Kiley heard an unexpected knock on her door. Her grandpa held out a milkshake as he said, “I’m sorry it’s really thin, but I tried.”
The effort. This is a precious man. He made his granddaughter a milkshake and delivered it. These are the memories that will carry Kiley through her life. Memories like this will pop up in her brain when she questions life and love. That “thin” milkshake is the stuff of pure love.
Kiley hasn’t had a picture-perfect life. As a young child, she suffered abuse at the hands of someone she loved and trusted. Within two hours of getting her driver’s permit, she rolled her mom’s car three times, and they had to extract her from the vehicle. Everyone had bruises, but were otherwise ok. The car was totaled. But she persevered.
Now, at 18, Kiley has adjusted well to life’s ups and downs. She put off getting her driver’s license after the rollover accident but is finally a licensed driver. Her orange creamsicle cat gives her a guilt trip every time she leaves home. She is in a loving relationship. She has a loving Grandpa who brings her handmade milkshakes.
