Behold A Bewitching View Of The Hunter’s Moon This Halloween Weekend!

With so many special Moon events taking place recently, it’s given me a renewed sense of appreciation for it — which is why I’m here to tell you about the next full Moon! Or rather, should I say, the Hunter’s Moon. As the Moon starts to appear at sunset this weekend on Saturday, October 28, it will likely appear larger and more orange than usual. How fitting for the autumn season!

Although the Almanac refers to most of the monthly fully Moons with names tied to early Native American, Colonial American, and European folklore, the Harvest Moon (which we experienced on September 23) and the Hunter’s Moon are different. Instead, they’re named in relation to the autumnal equinox.

This means they never take place at the exact same time every year. The Harvest Moon is declared to be the one that takes place closest to the autumnal equinox date, meaning it could be in September or October. The Hunter’s Moon is always the next full Moon after it, meaning it can take place in October or November.

As far as the name goes, it’s believed to be in reference to the fact that this Moon was a signal for hunters to prepare for winter. In any case, one thing is for sure: The Hunter’s Moon is going to look absolutely beautiful! Check out the Almanac to find out what time you can expect to see it where you live.
