For the First Time Ever Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Open for Public Tours

Jim Henson

When Jim Henson passed away on May 16, 1990, his death shocked the world. Jim was an artist, a visionary, and a legend in the world of puppeteering. Jim is best known for creating the iconic Muppets. He helped millions of children develop a lifelong love of learning through his work on Sesame Street and beyond. When he died, his devoted colleagues ensured that his legacy would live on. The Jim Henson Company continues to create memorable characters that appear on television and in film. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop has long been the creative hub for Muppeteers, and it’s now open to the public for tours. The New York City studio, once kept a secret, can now be explored by Muppet fans.

Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Tours Give Fans a View Like Never Before

Jason Weber, the shop’s creative supervisor, told the Associated Press the tours cost $150 per person and give unprecedented access to Jim Henson’s Muppets and their incredible creators.

“There is a level of expertise here that we’re sharing. It’s not just going to a pop-up store or something like that,” he said during a recent visit. “Things are made one-of-a-kind, made by hand with artisans who have been trained for years and decades,” Jason said.

Tours of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop last 80 minutes and take place on Saturdays. Visitors can take photos at only one spot along the way due to the secret, proprietary nature of what’s inside. Visitors also have a chance to pick the brain of a Henson puppeteer during a meet-and-greet to learn more about how their favorite characters come to life.

We have to believe that Jim would be unbelievably pleased with how his company stayed true to his vision all these years.
