The world is a bit less funky today. Michael Sumler, the legendary hype man for the soul group Kool & the Gang, has died. According to Atlanta News First, “Chicago Mike,” as he was best known by fans, perished in a car crash on May 25 in Mableton, Georgia. The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Veterans Memorial Highway when a car struck Chicago Mike’s vehicle at an intersection. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The other driver was not injured in the fatal crash.

“We are saddened by the death of musician Mike Sumler,” Mableton Mayor Michael Owens said in a statement. “‘Chicago Mike’ contributed so much to the music and entertainment communities. His style and energy added flare and excitement to Kool and the Gang for decades. The City of Mableton and I join his friends, family, and fans in mourning his loss.”

News of Chicago Mike’s passing addended Kool & the Gang fans. They shared tributes to the legend online.
“Confunkshun sends our deepest condolences to the family of our friend “Chicago Mike” from Kool & the Gang, stylist and dancer. Thank you Mike for always supporting Confunkshun. We had no idea that Sunday night’s Love’s Train would be your last ride. Rest in heavenly peace,” a fan wrote.
“If you were an IU fan in 1981, then you know that Kool & The Gang’s ‘Celebration’ is a synonymous memory of our winning the National Championship,” another shared. “Good times indeed! Yeah, I’m gonna take that too with me. R.I.P Michael Sumler.”
