Are you already able to picture what Sunny had in store for these items? When combined, they can create some of the most gorgeous fall lanterns you have ever seen. But before we get into the details of how to make them, let’s check out Sunny’s process, and the end result, in the video below!
@northwoodsfolk I’ve been seeing our trees begin to change, including one brilliant one all red just a few blocks away – so I thought it a good time to share these for those experiencing the beginnings of fall… and those just wanting to plan ahead ❤️🍁🍂 It’s as simple as a repurposed pickle jar, some pressed leaves and flowers, and some compost-friendly glue. Here’s the recipe (save this post for later reference): Here’s what you’ll need to make one cup of glue: 1 1⁄2 cups (350 ml) water 2 tablespoons of corn syrup or honey 1 teaspoon (4.9 ml) of vinegar 2 tablespoons (15 g) of cornstarch 1. In a saucepan, stir together 3/4 C (180ml) water, syrup, and vinegar and bring to a boil. 2. Combine the cornstarch and remaining 3/4 C of water and then whisk into mixture. Return to a boil and continue cooking for 1 minute. 3. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Store in airtight container. Best used fresh, but it will last a long time if kept in a cool place. You’ll want to allow your lanterns to dry and then reapply another layer or two. This will help keep the botanicals from flaking off. Have you tried making these jar lanterns yet? We enjoy making them grow every season, but I think fall is my favorite version 😍🍁🌿 Do you have any fall rituals or traditions that you love? I’m making our bucket list soon and would love to hear! #fallcrafts #pressedflowers #jarlantern #autumndecor #cottagecore ♬ Fade Into You – Mazzy Star
So, are you ready to get started? As Sunny explains in the caption of her post, you’ll need a few ingredients if you want to make your very own cup of glue.
The ingredients for Sunny’s homemade glue includes:
- 1 1⁄2 cups (350 ml) water
- 2 tablespoons of corn syrup or honey
- 1 teaspoon (4.9 ml) of vinegar
- 2 tablespoons (15 g) of cornstarch

In order for those ingredients to blend, they’ll need to be combined in a sauce pan.
Here are the three easy steps to follow, as written by Sunny:
- In a saucepan, stir together 3/4 C (180ml) water, syrup, and vinegar and bring to a boil.
- Combine the cornstarch and remaining 3/4 C of water and then whisk into mixture. Return to a boil and continue cooking for 1 minute.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool. Store in airtight container. Best used fresh, but it will last a long time if kept in a cool place.
After that glue has been made, it’s time to apply a few layers to the jar you’ve chosen. But first, Sunny has a tip in order to get the best results: “You’ll want to allow your lanterns to dry and then reapply another layer or two. This will help keep the botanicals from flaking off.”
Finally, you can strategically place your perfectly chosen leaves and flowers and… voilà! You’ve created a cozy, festive fall lantern. Enjoy!
