Man Captures Beautifully Terrifying Footage Of Tornado Starting To Form

Image shows a potential tornado forming with rotational cloud movement.

There is a running joke that when tornadoes roll in, different areas of the country react differently. People in the southwest typically head for storm shelters. Midwesterners head for the porch with their cameras. While mostly true, not all southerners head for the storm shelter. Texan Dustin Calabrese stayed outside with his camera, experiencing this adventure firsthand. He was able to catch the clouds as a potential tornado was forming, and the footage is captivating.

Although it might not look like much in his footage, the small portion of cloud forming below the big storm cloud is beginning to rotate. Storms assaulted Texas throughout the entire Memorial Day weekend. Five confirmed tornadoes touched down the day after this footage was captured.

Dustin captured the beginning of this rotation in a separate video. The rotation shocked them into uttering some expletives near the end. The above video begins a few seconds later and shows the rotation much better.

Texas is the nation’s leader when it comes to tornadoes. They record an average of 132 devastating funnel clouds every year. The greatest frequency of tornadoes touching down happens in the Red River Valley area of North Texas. Dustin identifies his location as “North Texas,” so we’re unsure if he’s near the Red River Valley, but it’s a possibility.

Know When A Tornado Is Forming

Knowing the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning can be lifesaving. The taco meme you’ve seen on social media is a great way to remember it.

When you have the ingredients, conditions are right, and a tornado is possible. If you’re holding a taco, you should probably head to the storm shelter. In short, a watch means no funnel has been spotted yet, and a warning means the funnel is actively moving.
