Be On The Alert: “Highly Sophisticated” Gmail Scam Is On The Rise

Gmail Scam

It seems that we learn about a new phishing scam aimed at defrauding people every day. Scammers often target vulnerable targets like older people who may not recognize someone taking advantage of them. Nick Johnson, the lead developer of Ethereum Name Service (ENS), brought to light a new Gmail scam. Unfortunately, he says a sophisticated scam like this could cause major issues. In a series of posts on X, Nick shared information and photos of what to look out for.

“Recently, I was targeted by an extremely sophisticated phishing attack, and I want to highlight it here. It exploits a vulnerability in Google’s infrastructure. And given their refusal to fix it, we’re likely to see it a lot more,” he explained.

The New Gmail Scam Looks Credible

Nick explained that the new Gmail scam made itself look authentic and came from a real Google email address. So this could easily fool people.

“The Sites link takes you to a very convincing ‘support portal’ page. They’ve cleverly used http://sites.google.com because they know people will see the domain is http://google.com and assume it’s legit,” he wrote.

But Nick said there are signs this is actually a Gmail scam and not a real email. Firstly, Nick said to look out for “a lot of whitespace.” Secondly, he found, “Google Legal Support was granted access to your Google account,” and the “odd me@… email address again” both suspicious.

“Good tech analysis, but there’s a key point that quickly flags this as a phish to someone familiar with Western business standards: No security message like this would ever be center justified. That’s an emotional format, or maybe advertising. Not for a serious business notice,” a comment reads.

This person thanked Nick for sharing the Gmail scam info. “I am glad to see you’ve found the same strategy I found for dealing with Google’s absurd amount of bureaucracy and incompetence: tweeting about it. I’ve had to do this twice and may do it a third time soon b/c this org is hell to deal with. And nothing else works. ty for sharing!”
