In 1971, Susan Shirley sang I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony). She may not have accomplished that goal, but a version of the song appeared in a commercial and helped sell millions of bottles of Coca-Cola. Fast forward a few decades and a contestant on America’s Got Talent also wanted to teach the world to sing, but this time, she did it. Astrid Jorgensen appeared on AGT and, in a matter of seconds, had the entire audience singing Toto’s Africa in perfect harmony. She used simple graphics and easy instructions and the next thing the judges knew, they were surrounded by music.

No One On “AGT” Had Seen Anything Like Astrid Jorgensen’s Talent
She grouped the audience by voice type and directed them to follow one of the colors on the screen. Following Astrid Jorgensen’s direction, the entire AGT studio audience sang along and made the judges smile. Well, sort of.
Sofia Vergara and Mel B. loved the performance but didn’t think it fit the show. Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell disagreed.
“I loved it,” Howie cheered. “I think that the world loves a sing along.”
Simon was particularly taken back by Astrid Jorgensen’s take of AGT.
“I think what you did was really smart,” he said. “Within about 20 seconds, every single person in this audience was singing the song. To have the capacity to do that within seconds and actually allow the to win the show is brilliant.”
Ultimately, Simon convinced Sofia to change her mind, and Astrid Jorgensen advanced to the next round on AGT.
“From a business perspective this is brilliant! We all love to sing along in concerts or karaoke, so I would definitely pay for a show in which the audience gets 100% involved,” a fan shared.
Another person who saw Astrid Jorgensen outside AGT had more insight.
I have been to a few of Astrid’s ‘pub choir’ shows in Australia and she does a lot more work than what was shown here,” the wrote. “She breaks down all the parts for the crowd, has funny slideshows with the lyrics and memes to help people follow along and in a full show, the room would go through the song and practice for a good 90 minutes before putting it together at the end. She also composes different arrangements and adds her own flair to every song. It’s an awesome experience to be a part of!!”
