Monarch butterflies feed only on the milkweed plant, and the Deschutes Land Trust is busy planting as much as possible. Monarch butterflies have suffered a severe decline over the years due to encroachment. Loss of wild milkweed plants due to urbanization caused a catastrophic decline in their numbers. Although it can be heartbreaking to drive through a butterfly migration, the scene in this clifftop view is incredible. Hikers in the area plan trips to catch the migration of the monarch butterfly in full force. The area is famous for the monarch migration, but western tiger swallowtail and the pale swallowtail butterflies are also plentiful. Monarchs thrive when wild milkweed is available and growing in the area.

Monarch butterflies will migrate as far as 3,000 miles in the spring and fall of each year. In the spring, they come up to Northern climates from Mexico. The sight of so many butterflies in one place can lead to incredible sights, like this butterfly waterfall. Otis, the dog, had a relaxing afternoon on South Sister Mountain watching the monarchs flit around his head.

Butterflies aren’t just beautiful to look at. They play an integral part in our ecosystems. As they travel from plant to plant, butterflies spread pollen, helping plants to thrive. Keeping the monarch active in central Oregon helps to keep the entire area healthy. This is helpful for all animals that call the area home.
