Rare “Water Nado” Captured On Camera At Utah Reservoir

Image shows a waterspout recorded over Strawberry Reservoir in Utah on May 28, 2018.

As tornadoes race across the United States, creating mayhem, they stir up memories. Residents of Utah remember a waterspout from May 28, 2018. Utah experiences tornadoes yearly, although less frequently than in the Midwest states. Several people recorded the tornado at Strawberry Reservoir. It was a weak funnel, and no damage was recorded as a result. The video below is from a campground adventure on the reservoir’s edge.

Chante Lundskog recorded a video from a boat on the reservoir. You can hear the roar of the funnel over the boat’s engine. Chante stated she had seen the funnel forming over the water and watched as it raced up the mountain.

There are differences between tornadoes, funnel clouds, and waterspouts. A funnel cloud forms at the base of a cloud, but never comes in contact with the ground. A waterspout forms over water, connecting the water’s surface with the clouds above. Tornadoes are funnel clouds that reach the ground. A waterspout can become a tornado if it reaches land, as the Strawberry Reservoir waterspout in Utah did. This third video shows the spout leaving the water.

Storm chasers follow these storms, “chasing” them to record their travel route, damage, and other pertinent information. These courageous people submit astonishing footage from vantage points close to the storm. Surprisingly, most storm footage comes from ordinary people recording on their phones. An airline passenger recorded a tornado over Denver from the air on May 18, 2025. That tornado touched down in Bennett, Colorado.

As tornadoes become more frequent and intense, it is a good idea to have a safety plan in place. Under a tornado warning, retreat to a safe interior place and try to stay away from all windows.
