Sweet New Trend Allows Children To Finish “Old School” Sayings And Their Responses Are Too Sweet

Old-school sayings get new meanings when finished by a child.

The world is changing. When Destini Ann decided to test her daughter on this new philosophy, she asked her daughter, Phee, to complete some old-school disciplinary sayings that many of our parents used while we were growing up. Some of the phrases have different endings depending on where you were raised, but the base meaning was always the same.

Destini starts with “I’m not one of …” and her daughter quickly answers “us.” Moving on, Destini says, “A hard head makes a soft …” Answering “… a pillow” completely changes the meaning of that phrase. It is clear from her expression that Destini prefers this new interpretation.

“Children are to be …” continues the more optimistic mom. Most of us remember the ending as “… seen and not heard.” Phee has a different idea, saying “… children.” Softer than the old-school saying and more in tune with our current child-rearing practices. The next, “I’ll give you something to …” usually ended with “… cry about.” Phee is more food-centered and said “… eat.” Her response is way better than the spanking promised in earlier times.

When it comes to behaving in public, the old-school saying, “When we go into the store, don’t …” usually ended with “… touch anything.” Some parents would say, “Look with your eyes, not with your hands.” Phee thinks we shouldn’t steal stuff, which works equally well.

Destini continues, “I brought you into this world, and I can …” was never good to hear. Although mostly an empty threat, kids believed it. Of course, Phee’s answer was “… feed you.” This next old-school saying plays right into that as Destini says, “Go get my …” and Phee adds “… purse.”

We think Phee is hinting at a stop for chicken nuggets at a local fast food eatery.
