Every year, millions of monarch butterflies migrate from eastern areas of North America to the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico. Unlike other types of butterflies, monarchs are unable to withstand harsh winters. So, during the coldest months of the year, they simply go to a warmer location. In order to do this, they must travel more than 3,000 miles! Needless to say, the sight of a monarch butterfly migration is breathtaking.

That’s why so many people gather to witness this migration for themselves. Becky Nesel and her friend got the chance to do that this year. Seeing their emotional reaction helps put into perspective just how awe-inspiring these tiny, beautiful butterflies really are. Experience the moment for yourself in the video below!
While viewing this migration in person is a joyful experience, it’s important to do so in a way that does not disrupt the butterflies’ process. The Beauty of a Monarch Butterfly Migrations Leaves This Woman in Tears
“You aren’t supposed to reach out and touch the butterflies,” Becky adds, “but sometimes they’ll land on you for a few seconds and it’s the best feeling ever.”
These gorgeous migrations take place twice a year. Typically, you can expect them to head south in October. Then, when March comes around, they start to head back north. So, even if you don’t get the opportunity to witness one of these migrations in person, you can count on folks like Becky to provide some of the best footage possible. Take, for example, this video of millions of monarchs flying around in Mexico.
