Food is expensive. Clothes are expensive. Everything is expensive! I wish I’d gotten a job on campus my first year because campus administrators and staff are really flexible about schedules since they know you have a ton of other responsibilities. I worked as a student assistant for 9 hours a week at my university library’s writing center, and it was the easiest job ever. I was able to splurge on whatever clothes or food I wanted without feeling guilty about it. There are a ton of jobs and work-study programs on campus, you just have to know where to look. Career expos also have tons of companies come by just for you to meet with. Your school’s career center should have a database of available jobs on and off campus so you can afford your habits. It’ll also list internships and externships, and it’s never too early to build up your professional skills. Even if you can’t find something you like on the website, organizations you’re a member of often give you networking opportunities and information about companies to contact. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a company you’re interested in to get involved, that’s how I ended up here at InspireMore!

For the sake of a timeline, you should be prepping for the MCAT, DAT, GMAT, GRE, etc. to take during your junior year (or shortly after) if you want to go to grad school right after you graduate!

Don’t forget to take some cool electives if you have room in your schedule. I am the prime example of this. After taking choir classes since I was 12 years old in grade school, I took multiple music courses and got to keep my hobby alive. I also took hip hop dance and improvisation, and learned a ton of skills and even more about myself. Through these classes, I got to meet the most talented, eclectic people.
