Granddaughter Sings Hymn To Senile Grandfather — Then He Recognizes The Song & Joins In.

Dementia can take so much away… but for Mallory Headings’s grandfather, a lot still remains.

Growing up, when her parents were at work, her grandparents would watch her. That meant that she developed a very close relationship with them. Though her grandfather now has dementia, he still remembers some things. Researchers have found that dementia patients who participate in creative arts programs are more engaged – Mallory and her family saw this firsthand just the other day.

Recently, Mallory moved her grandfather to a nursing home. Though it was a hard decision, it was the right one for him. Right before her family left to return home, they decided to sing a hymn with him.

What happened next was simply beautiful.

“My grandpa has dementia. My grandparents watched me every day while my parents were at work until I was 12. They were a huge part of my upbringing. My grandpa has always loved music. My earliest memories are of him and Grandma singing music from The Gaithers. They love southern gospel. There was always music in their home. He was put in the nursing home yesterday for the first time after a few days in the hospital. Before my family left, we sang these old hymns and my grandpa still remembers his harmony.”
