Too Cute: Pair Of Newborn Moose Frolic In Alaskan Backyard

Image shows baby moose twins playing in an Alaskan yard.

Baby moose are gangly and uncoordinated on their best days. Seeing one wibbledy-wobbledy calf is a joy, but seeing twins is double the fun. A moose cow will have a twin birth approximately every three years. That means, for every three cows, one will likely bear twins in any given year. For Gracie Bailey, the twin comedy show is playing in her backyard, and she is loving it.

Living in Alaska has perks. One of those is having a front row seat to view nature right outside your window. Imagine sitting down to your first cup of morning coffee. You’re sluggish and trying to wake up gently by looking out the window. You catch movement and spot twin moose babies playing in your yard. Instant dopamine boost!

Baby moose are precocial at birth, meaning they can walk almost immediately after being born. They are wobbly for the first several days. Couple that with legs that seem too long and spindly to support their bodies, and you have a perfect recipe for hilarity. After posting the first video, several people asked Gracie if the mom was around. Not to worry. Momma Moose was very near keeping a protective eye on her playful calves.

Baby moose nurse exclusively for their first few days, then they begin foraging when they are around five days old. They will nurse and forage for several months and be fully weaned by six months of age. Most calves stay with their mother for their first year, but she will chase them off before giving birth to her next calf. Although moose are solitary animals, if a baby moose is orphaned, it might be adopted by another cow with a similarly aged calf.
