Sweet Grandma Is Crocheting Up A Storm To Make Her Granddaughter’s Dream Come True.

Jane Hoffman first learned how to crochet from her sister when she was just three years old, a skill that ended up becoming a life-long passion.

Even though she’s unemployed, between her pension and the money she makes selling her work, she’s able to support not only herself but her family. Most recently, though, her biggest goal is to help her granddaughter, Rookshana Davids, become a nurse.

Luckily, Jane has a whole group of fellow crochet workers for moral support through ReBag.ReUse, a social project in South Africa. Instead of using yarn, this innovative group uses clean, soft plastic to create beach bags, hats, shopping bags, and yoga mats.

“We collect plastic from community, neighbors, nursing homes, shops and local restaurants,” the founder, Regina le Roux said. “Then we roll them into plastic yarn balls and place them into a bag so that when the ladies start their crocheting, they won’t run out of any plastic.”

Since the women in the group aren’t employed by Regina, they’re free to make as much or as little as they’d like. But so far, they’ve managed to make more than 30 items every month, and their popularity is only increasing with time — especially around the holidays!

“December was quite a great month for us all as most of the tourists in Cape Town bought of our items,” Regina said. “Most of our crocheting items are ‘living’ overseas which is fantastic.”

Thanks to this tight-knit group’s popularity, Jane was able to buy data for Rookshana so she could apply to nursing school, something she was able to do after passing her matric.

“I am a proud grandmother,” Jane said. “Rookshana passed her matric and will hopefully be able to further her studies. I want her to become independent and not depend on anyone but herself.”

Taking a look at Jane’s life, it’s easy to see why Rookshana is so proud of her grandmother. Not only did she grow up being given helpful advice, but she’s also had the privilege of seeing her grandmother lead by example.

“I’m thankful to my grandmother for standing by me through all the hard times, and I’m thankful for all the sacrifices she made to get me through matric,” Rookshama said, “But I’m more grateful for having her in my life and for always going the extra mile for me, and always supporting me while I was studying.”
