Singer-Songwriter Jill Sobule Tragically Dies In House Fire One Day Before Tour Stop

Sad news for music lovers. Jill Sobule, the groundbreaking singer of 1995’s I Kissed A Girl, died in a house fire in Minneapolis on May 1. Jill was on tour and had a show set for May 2 at Swallow Hill Music’s Tuft Theater in her hometown of Denver. The venue posted a show cancellation notice and instead will have a free, informal gathering in Jill’s honor. Swallow Hill shared a statement from Jill’s manager confirming her death.

“Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture. I was having so much fun working with her. I lost a client & a friend today. I hope her music, memory, & legacy continue to live on and inspire others,” John Porter wrote.

Jill Sobule Loved Music And Entertaining

According to her website, Jill Sobule, a Denver native, recorded her first record in 1990 and continued writing and producing for decades. Known as a “road warrior,” Jill performed 100 shows a year all around the country.

In her final Instagram post on April 29, Jill lamented the challenges of life on the road.

“It’s been hard being on tour. I somehow messed up my back and have sciatica. The morning is the worst. Any advice? Any good back docs l, physical therapist etc. in LA l? I’ll be there for a few weeks. In the meantime, a cartoon,” she wrote.

Sadly, she never made it back to Los Angeles.

After news of her passing spread, fans shared tributes to Jill Sobule on Instagram.

“Jill you’ve meant so much to me since I was fifteen. You made this world a safer, funnier, better place for everyone— especially us underdogs. Thank you, you will be so missed. Take me back, take me home, to the world that never was,” someone shared.

“I’ll miss you so much my friend. So happy we got to know each other in this life,” a grieving friend wrote.

This fan put it beautifully. “THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC XX.”

Jill Sobule was 66 years old. A celebration of her life will take place at a later date.
