When a baby was abandoned at the hospital by her parents, doctors asked Jeff and Sarah Evans to stay with the little girl so she wouldn’t die alone. Her name was Nellie-Mai, and she had suffered multiple heart attacks. Doctors said she had no chance of surviving without a transplant and because she had no family to care for her, she wouldn’t be able to receive one. When the couple heard that, they made a quick decision to become her foster parents.
Then, 300 miles away, 7-year-old Jade Stoner was hit by a car while riding her bike. By the time she arrived at the hospital, she had been declared brain dead… Her heartbroken parents decided their little girl’s life would not be in vain and decided to donate her organs to others in need.
Her liver went to a 17-month-old boy, and her kidneys to two different men. But then the Evans received word that her heart was to beat inside the chest of Nellie-Mai. They remember feeling a mix of emotions. “At that point,”Jeff Evans said, “it sunk in that someone had to lose a child in order for Nellie to live.â€
After a successful transplant surgery and a full recovery, Nellie-Mai was able to grow up just like any other kid.
10 years later, Jade Stoner’s mother Debbie, decided she wanted to meet Nellie-Mai and her new family. The emotional moment was captured in the video below as Debbie hears her late daughter’s heart for the first time since Jade tragically passed away.
