When a Texas family discovered an abandoned baby bird during a cookout, they came up with a creative way to keep her warm until help arrived: wrap her in a tortilla! Wild West Rehabilitation Center told the hilarious story on Facebook. In their post, they explained that they’d received a call about a “possibly orphaned” chick. One of their rehabbers, Christy, wanted to make sure the critter was safe until someone could get out there. So, she asked what the family was doing to shelter the bird. Their answer surprised her!
“Rehabber Christy managed the call and inquired if they had already placed it in a box, to which they responded ‘we wrapped him in a warm tortilla,'” wrote the wildlife center. “There was a significant silence on Christy’s side. Following this and a little concerned, she quickly ended the call and arranged for a transporter.”
However, it turns out there was no cause for alarm. Apparently, the warm tortilla ended up being a great way to keep the baby bird comfortable until Amee, another rehabber, arrived.
“Undoubtedly, it was an inventive method to keep the baby warm, and surprisingly, it was effective,” read the Facebook post.
At first, the Texas family had thought the abandoned chick might be a barn owl. Wild West Rehabilitation Center later identified her as a Mississippi Kite. Then, they posted an update on the creature’s condition. Apparently, she’s doing very well in rehab! They named the baby bird “Taquito,” referencing the resourceful tortilla method employed by her rescuers.
According to the second Facebook post, Taquito will be staying at the wildlife center for about two months. During that time, she’ll be in good company, as there are quite a few other Mississippi Kites receiving care there.
We’re so glad that Taquito is safe and healthy!
