Snow and lava are total opposites. And yet, visitors to Italy can appreciate both at the same time — at least when the timing is right! This is made possible, in part, because of Mount Etna. Known as Europe’s largest and most active volcano, it began to erupt again just last week. And as timing would have it, the eruption began when a group of skiers were near the volcano.

While this may sound dangerous, it seems that the skiers were never in any danger. In fact, a Mount Etna tour guide explained that this volcano is one of the few that allows skiers to get “near a lava field.” That said, it’s important to not get too close! Find out what it looks like to ski near an erupting volcano in the video below.
@brutamerica On Feb 11, this video was shared to Facebook of a skier passing as Mount Etna erupted. Located in Sicily, Italy, Mount Etna is continental Europe’s most active volcano. Following this eruption, authorities have announced there is no reason for alarm. Earlier in August, the mountain had a large eruption causing multiple aircraft to hold. #MountEtna #Italy #skiing #nature #natureiswild #naturaldisaster #eruption #crazyvids ♬ original sound – Brut.
Skiers Experience a Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment When Mount Etna Erupts
Sometimes, Mount Etna’s eruptions can be explosive. Other times, like right now, there is a more persistent flow. The latest reports show that this flow of lava has become a two-mile river, flowing from an altitude of nearly 10,000 feet. As a result, hiking activities have been banned in this area.
“I can’t believe I live in a time where I can watch a video like this on my phone,” someone shares in reply to that breathtaking footage, with another person asking, “So is it cold or hot there?”
“What did you do today?” a third person writes, imagining how these daring skiers might react if asked this question, “Nothing, just [went skiing] by an erupting volcano.”
Viewing a volcanic eruption at this distance is something many of us dream of doing — because how cool is this hiker’s view in Hawaii!? That said, as always, please make sure to take extreme caution if given the opportunity to do so yourself!
