In the US, we are most familiar with the umbrella cockatoo, which is predominantly white. Australia has five species of black cockatoos: the red-tailed, yellow-tailed, Baudin’s, Carnaby’s, and glossy black.
In creating this red-tailed cockatoo, Jamie explains that females have more vibrant tail coloration. He modeled his version after the female to bring that coloring to life.

As Jamie creates the feathering pattern on the body, he uses tiny individual pieces of paper for each feather. Each feather is placed using tweezers. He will add details with a paintbrush later to add white or yellow dots that adorn every feather of his paper art.

Moving to the head and face, Jamie places the crest. Cockatoos can flatten their crest when resting, or raise it when excited or joyful. Jamie added a raised crest on his paper art version. As he fills the face, each feather gets smaller and smaller. The level of detail is incredible.

As the beautiful black cockatoo takes shape, Jamie adds as much realism as possible to the model. When he is finished, it is difficult to tell a real bird from the paper art model.

Watching each piece of paper art come to life as Jamie adds details is an experience that cannot be adequately put into words. For more videos like this, follow Jamie Lord Art on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. To purchase paper art, visit Jamie’s website.
