Most flights are, at best, boring and routine. At worst, they’re hectic, uncomfortable, even frightening. What’s more, flying oftentimes brings out the worst in people. From anxiety over making your connection in time, to irritation over the temperature (it seems almost every flight is either suffocatingly hot or frigid cold), to vexation over the person that’s kicking the back of your seat or using your arm-rest… It’s hardly a setting where one might expect to have one’s faith in humanity restored. But that’s exactly what happened for a woman named Angela Byrd.
Angela was flying home to Georgia from Minnesota when she noticed a pregnant woman flying alone with her young son. The woman had her hands full with the cranky little boy, and was clearly exhausted, but one man– a complete stranger– stepped up with a pair of helping hands. Angela watched the entire interaction and tells the story below:
On a flight back to Georgia, this man, who was a stranger to this woman, offered to help her because she was pregnant and alone on the flight and her son was upset and fussy. He told her that he was a dad, and wanted to help her so she could rest.
He walked the aisle most of the flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta comforting this woman’s son as if he was his own.
I was in tears– not because he was white and she was black– but because it showed me today that there are still GOOD people out there in a world full of turmoil.

That man– a stranger– spent an entire flight walking the aisles of a plane, holding someone else’s child. What an incredible picture of love and service.
