While serving in Afghanistan, 20-year-old Donny Eslinger came across a puppy and knew he had to adopt him. Named “Smoke,” the dog was carried back to camp in his backpack and the two were inseparable from that day forward.

Soon after, however, Donny was seriously injured in the line of duty and flown back to the U.S. to recover. Sadly, Smoke had to stay behind.
But Donny’s father set out to reunite the two pals knowing the puppy would help raise his ailing son’s spirits. With the help of the 1-24 Infantry Battalion of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Donny’s family raised enough money to reunite Smoke with Donny.
