Fair warning: This is a two, possibly three tissue story.
Hearts are melting all around the web today, thanks to a viral video shared by a mom named Jessie Barber. Jessie is a mother to five kids and the youngest is disabled. On a recent trip to Disney World, the family was enjoying a meal together when one of the boy’s favorite characters wandered up to their table.
Jessie was holding her child in her lap when Winnie the Pooh himself approached the table. The mom is used to people seeing her son and recognizing that he’s disabled, and she’s also used to people feeling awkward and not knowing quite how to interact with her boy.
Yet, Winnie the Pooh didn’t hesitate for an instant; he treated the boy as he would any other child at Disney World — with love, respect, and kindness.
Ever so gently, Winnie holds the boy’s hand and gives him a little nose rub with his big bear nose. Over the course of about 10 minutes, the beloved storybook character gave the child kisses on his hands and head and basically doled out a heaping serving of love for the delighted little boy.
The boy reacts to Winnie’s love in the only way he can, by arching his back and reaching his head up to give the character a kiss in return. We can only imagine that the person wearing the Winnie suit must have been weeping like a baby in there because it’s impossible not to tear up when you watch this beautiful interaction.
Jessie put the video on her Facebook page along with the caption:
For those of you who have disabled children know the feel[ing] when people look but aren’t sure how to interact with your kiddo. This Winnie the Pooh melted my heart and knew exactly what to do! He spent 10+ minutes with our little guy and he loved every second of it. Thank you Pooh!
Hundreds of thousands of people reacted to Jessie’s post. Some shared their own fond memories of the way Disney characters had spent time with their disabled children, while others simply thanked Pooh for living up to his character’s reputation as being the kindest bear in the 100 Acre Woods — and beyond.
Get those tissues handy and watch the beautiful moments shared between Winnie the Pooh and this special little boy below, and don’t forget to share.
