“Angel” Nurse Comforts Elderly Cancer Patient After Surgery With Touching Song.

Sometimes a simple act of comfort can make all the difference.

Margaret Smith is undergoing cancer treatments at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Margaret was struggling to wake up after receiving too much anesthesia; luckily, she had a very special nurse by her side the entire time.

Wiping away tears from Margaret’s eyes (and her own), nurse Olivia Neufelder, RN, BSN sang a country song about angels and encouraged Margaret to sing along as best she could. Now, Margaret and her family are saying that it’s Olivia herself who is an angel.

Margaret’s daughter, Megan Smith, told the story on Facebook. She praised Olivia for caring for Margaret as tenderly as she would have if Margaret was a member of her own family.

“This nurse sat with my mom for hours while the medicine from too much Anesthesia and sang a very special song to my sweet mother to comfort her,” Megan said. “Words cannot describe the appreciation and love we feel for nurse Olivia, who mom calls her angel!”

Olivia never left Margaret’s side for hours, stroking her face, singing to her, and holding her hand.

Later, Olivia took to her own Facebook page and shared that she was also incredibly moved by the moment she shared with Margaret: “Miss Marg has touched my heart in such an indescribable way,” Olivia said. “I am so humbled and honored to be a nurse. My thoughts and prayers are forever with this amazing family.”

Crystal Roberts, another family member, also took to Facebook to praise the Vanderbilt nursing staff, and Olivia in particular. “Nurse Olivia is the best nurse ever,” Crystal said. “The best example of what a nurse should be. Thank you, Olivia, Margaret just loves you!!! Thank you for staying hours with her when we couldn’t be there!!!”

Megan added a special note to Olivia, “Your dedication to your patients is beyond any that I have seen, you truly are a beam of light and I cannot thank you enough for the compassion and care and love you shared for my mother.”
