All of us have been guilty of judging a book by its cover. Most of the time, the subconscious assessment doesn’t register in any discernible way but still manages to colour our opinion of a person before getting to know them. These snap judgments can be for the good or for the bad, but in the case of Kevin Skinner, judges on America’s Got Talent really got it wrong on first glance.

When the humble, soft spoken man stepped out on stage with his guitar and an accent that would shock a Texan, you could see exactly what the judges and audience were thinking… ‘this will be painful to listen to.’
The assumptions only got worse as Skinner described his employment history as an ‘out of work chicken catcher who wasn’t so good at math.’ The description drew a few laughs from the crowd… but it was obvious they weren’t laughing with him.
Then Skinner began to sing.
As his voice washed over the judges table and crowd, you could hear a pin drop in the crowded auditorium. Skinner left the stage with raving reviews and a chance to compete in the 2011 season of AGT – and eventually went on to win the 4th season!
Check out the amazing audition in the video below and remember, never judge a book by its cover.
