Uber Driver Couldn’t Afford To Watch Son Compete In Olympics, But Then A Stranger Jumped In The Backseat And Changed Everything.

Pennsylvania Uber driver Ellis Hill was taking Liz Willock on an hour long trek to Philadelphia, PA when he mentioned his son was representing the USA in the upcoming olympics. “When I told her about my son she was really amazed, but when she asked me if I was going over there to watch him, I said I really couldn’t afford it,” Hill, a retired bus driver, told PEOPLE.

When Willock asked if Hill was going to go see his son compete in Rio, Hill sadly explained he couldn’t afford the plane ticket. “It was devastating to hear that,” Willock told PEOPLE. “Here’s this wonderful man who has a close relationship with his son and I know any parent would want to see their son or daughter compete at the Olympics, but it was very understandable how that could be out of reach.”

It was in that moment that Willock offered Hill a seemingly impossible gift.

“She asked me, ‘If I could get you a ticket would you go?’ ” Hill recalls. “And I said, ‘Oh my goodness I don’t even know you!’ She said, ‘No. I believe you and I were fated to meet and I’m going to try to make this happen,’ ” Hill continued.

Willock didn’t have the funds herself, but the determined Uber passenger decided to start a crowd funding campaign that absolutely caught fire.

In just two days, Willock’s campaign raised the 7,500 dollars needed to send the deserving man to the Olympics to cheer for his son. Hill was leaving church on Sunday when a local news station called to tell him he was going to Rio!

“I was ecstatic,” Hill says. “I feel really grateful and overcome by the knowledge that there are good people out there.”

“There has been so much sadness and violence in the news lately and this really restored my faith in humanity,” Willock says. “We had over 150 people contribute and I think Ellis knew maybe 10 of them. The rest were strangers.”

Time and time again, people pull together to do something good in a world that sees to be growing darker every day. It’s people like Willock and those that contributed that make it a little brighter.
