Tired Arms, Much? All-Female Crew Rows 2,400 Miles And Smashes World Record.

Libby Costello, Sophia Denison Johnston, Brooke Downes and Adrienne Smith of the Lat 35 women’s team

Until last month, the four members of Lat 25 Racing had never navigated their boat in deep ocean waters.

In spite of their inexperience with deep sea rowing, Libby Costello, Sophia Denison Johnston, Brooke Downes, and Adrienne Smith launched their vessel in San Francisco, California and set off for Honolulu, Hawaii following their dream of setting a new world record.

For the next 34 days, 14 hours, and 11 minutes, the women endured sea sickness, little sleep, rough seas, and boil-to-order prepackaged meals. They rowed in two-hour shifts, and by the time they were a few weeks in, they had to dig deep to find the strength to keep going.

“We were, what, 25 days in 26, 26 days? And I was just like, I sat down, I was making food and I just started crying,” Adrienne recalled.

Throughout their journey of 2,400 nautical miles, the women kept their fans entertained with videos and pictures on their social media pages. They were all intent on breaking barriers that face women in athletics, insisting that they’re not “superhuman,” they’re just hardworking!

“I think something that I want people to take away is that like, these women are so incredible, but like, we’re not superhuman,” said Brooke. “There’s nothing that we were born with that makes us any different than anybody else.”

On July 26th, the team rowed their way into the Waikiki Yacht Club in Honolulu. They also rowed their way straight into the world record books as the fastest all-female team to ever make the journey!

“I feel totally overwhelmed in the best way by love,” said Denison Johnston. “And I’m also exhausted.”

“We inspired a bunch of different types of people,” Libby agreed. “That’s really important.”

What an incredible achievement! We know a lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into setting this record, but these ladies somehow make it look easy.
