Being young and in love is wonderful, and the good news is that it doesn’t cost a thing. Dating, however, can be expensive.
On a now-viral Twitter thread, a man named Tim was dining at a nice restaurant when a young couple at a table nearby caught his eye. Instantly recognizing the blush of a new romance, Tim began to quietly watch them navigate what seemed to be their first date. It quickly became clear to him that these two were having a bit of “sticker shock” when they saw the prices on the menu.

“Saw something lovely as I was eating my Sunday dinner earlier,” Tim wrote on Twitter. “A young couple sat at the table next to me. They looked and sounded like a couple just starting out and it was probably their first meal out together.”
Very quickly, the couple’s excitement turned to dismay when they got a look at the prices.

The couple continued to debate whether the man should pay the entire bill or if he’d consider splitting it with his date. Naturally, the young man insisted on footing the bill, even though his pale face told the real story!

Tim says he was getting a big kick out of seeing two people who are clearly in the beginning of a beautiful romance. When the young man went to the bathroom, his date even pulled out her phone to text a friend, grinning like mad the whole time.
When the waiter asked him if he wanted anything else, Tim admits, “I wasn’t really concentrating — I was watching a young couple in love.” What he didn’t realize just then was that the waiter had also been admiring the couple, enjoying their burgeoning romance.

How sweet is that? A few glasses of champagne costs the restaurant very little, but it made such a beautiful difference for this couple!

It’s wonderful to know that people like Tim and the waiter simply wanted to enjoy and celebrate someone else’s happiness.

As Tim left the restaurant, he took a moment to commend the waiter for helping out in such a subtle and selfless way. The waiter’s reply was perfect.

Thousands of Twitter users agreed with Tim’s sentiment. After he posted his thread, people were quick to share their own sweet stories of helping young, broke couples when they were just starting out in life.

There is hope! Just observing the world around us presents ample opportunity to do kind things for others. This waiter could have ignored the struggling couple and gone about his night, but he chose to be kind instead. That is what being a good person truly means — helping others while expecting nothing in return.
