Every night for the last 22 years, Dr. Jim Withers immediately follows long days at work with a wardrobe change. However, it’s not what you’d think – his attire imitates that of a homeless man. Dr. Withers operates his practice with a simple idea: The best way to care for the homeless is to treat them where they live. Another way to put it is that he’s “making house calls to people without homes.”
In order to interact with the homeless and make them feel comfortable with getting treatment, Withers and his partner, Mike Sallows, dress like the people their caring for, wearing old clothes while carrying bags of splints, inhalers, and basic meds. Withers has estimated that from this nightly practice, he helps around 1,200 homeless people a year!
These are truly incredible and giving men who sacrifice their every night to help people less fortunate… and they love doing it.
