One of the rare married couples to win a Nobel Prize, this pair discovered “grid cells” in the entorhinal cortex of the hippocampus that allow for spatial navigation. Along with place cells, these grid cells make for an extraordinary inner GPS system.

Edvard and May-Britt are also founding directors of the Kavli Foundation for Systems Neuroscience and they’ve dedicated their time to understanding how our brains map space in terms of memory and location. Their discoveries are leading the investigation of Alzheimer’s and the struggle of patients dealing with spatial memory loss.
