Schools are closing around the world because of COVID-19, leaving kids without much to do. One of the best ways to combat boredom and care for ourselves is to get outside, so parents are gathering their little ones and taking frequent walks.
Knowing this, neighbors are getting creative to keep the children in their communities entertained! Since kiddos love scavenger hunts, people have started putting teddy bears in their windows as part of a collective game.
What an easy way to make someone’s day! All you have to do is find a stuffed animal (preferably a bear, but others will do) and put it in a street-facing window so kids can start counting.
The idea originated from the book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury.
Even if you haven’t heard of it, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with the story through a cute song. As kids grab their binoculars, they splash through water (you can’t go over it), slush through mud (you can’t go under it), and swish through grass (you’ll have to go through it).
Communities from several different states (and the rest of the world) are starting to get involved in this fun pastime!
In Tennessee, one neighbor gushed over the movement, saying, “The smiles on some of the faces where the parents took them were just incredible.” Someone in Lousiana added, “It’s cheerful. It’s something to look forward to.”
Many of these hunts started through local Facebook groups, but the idea has moved beyond those virtual walls. Even better, communities are adding to the game by hanging rainbows and hearts in their homes to keep kids happy.
What a wonderful way to come together in this uncertain time! Check out the Coronavirus Good News Dashboard for more stories of joy and hope.
