Raising kids is always challenging, but some specific struggles come with being an adoptive parent.
For example, some interracial families need help with hair care, especially if the children have textured locks and their parents do not. That’s where Tamekia Swint comes in!
Tamekia is the executive director of Styles 4 Kidz, a nonprofit salon in Chicago, Illinois, that teaches interracial, adoptive, and foster parents how to care for their children’s hair.
The organization has helped more than 1,000 families and holds classes at local adoption agencies. These lessons cover topics like washing, styling, and the right products to use.
For Tamekia, it’s about empowering parents and their little ones at the same time!
Learning a new skill can be frustrating and intimidating, after all, but it’s something all moms and dads can master with a bit of guidance.
As for the children, Tamekia said, “Hair is important for African American kids because your hair is your crown. When you feel good about how you look, that propels you into the world as a productive citizen.”
“What it does for the self-esteem and confidence of the kids is just unbelievable. It’s amazing to see the transformation that takes place,” she added. “At the end of the day when I go home, I feel like I’ve truly made a difference in someone’s life and that is beyond words.”
What a wonderful resource for so many loving families! Every child deserves to feel great when they look in the mirror, and thanks to Tamekia and her team, their parents can make sure they do! You can support this organization as they boost more kids’ confidence by donating here.
