After Decades Of War, This Inspiring Tea Company Is Bringing Hope To Afghanistan.

In countries such as Afghanistan, economic opportunities are scarce. Destruction, chaos, and poverty, on the other hand, are hardships most citizens have faced.

Unfortunately, the country’s illegal drug economy is booming. Afghanistan is the world’s leading illicit opium producer, with its harvest producing more than 90 percent of the world’s heroin. It’s a staggering statistic that inspired one woman’s mission to bring hope to war-torn countries — and affect real, lasting change through social enterprise.

That’s how Tahmina International came to be. Its CEO and founder — who doesn’t reveal her name due to the nature of the business — envisioned helping the poor in conflict zones by creating new business opportunities alternative to the drug industry. Now she’s seeing her vision come to life, starting with one of Afghanistan’s luxury items: saffron.

Tahmina (derived from the Persian word tahm, meaning strong and brave) operates in Afghanistan and the U.S., exporting and selling the high-quality spice as well as saffron-infused teas.

The company prides itself on its vision to export “transformational products” from different conflict areas of the world. Currently, they’re working hard to develop the saffron industry in Afghanistan by supporting local producers, farmers, and women. But they hope to expand to other countries in the future.

“We believe that economic development is one of the sustainable agents of change to war-torn societies and that the call to bravery will overcome the history of fear in these nations,” Tahmina’s founder said.

Not only are the people behind Tahmina using business to help rebuild Afghanistan’s economy, but they’re donating 10% of their revenue to local nonprofits and giving men, women, and children brighter futures. Now that’s a brand we can all get behind.
