Sometimes, you’re just plain “out to lunch” – literally and figuratively.
When Michael Zapin, an attorney from Boca Raton, Florida, decided to surprise his mother at a family luncheon in New York, he had no idea that his plan would turn into a ridiculously hilarious situation, becoming legendary in their family.
It all started when Michael crept up behind his mom in the restaurant and pretended to be their waiter.

As his mom perused the menu, Michael disguised his voice and proceeded to “help” her make her choice. Meanwhile, everyone else at the table couldn’t help but giggle uncontrollably at the ruse.
Just moments after Michael engaged her, grandma even glanced up at him… and didn’t recognize him at all.

At this point, no one at the table could contain themselves. Michael’s niece Rian could be heard gasping, “Oh my gosh, Grandma!”
Soon, the family starts to drop some serious hints that this waiter is more than he seems. “Waiter” Mike even tells the table that he’s from Florida, and the family replies, “My brother lives in Florida! Maybe you know him?”
Even while her son is being name-dropped, Grandma continues to focus on the important things, like what she’s going to eat for lunch. And hey, who can blame the lady? It’s lunchtime… first things first!

When it becomes clear that this scenario isn’t playing out as he’d thought it would, Michael starts riffing with his other family members. Finally, as the family grew more and more incredulous, someone asks Mike what his name is, and he replies honestly: “Michael Zapin.”
“Just like your son. What an amazing coincidence!” Grandpa says sarcastically.
But she still. Didn’t. Get it.

When the kids couldn’t take it anymore, they finally clued her in and told her to turn around and give that “waiter” a good, long look. How embarrassing, but totally endearing nevertheless!
“We hadn’t seen my uncle in a long time because he lives far away, which adds to why my grandma didn’t recognize him for a while,” Rian later explained on YouTube. But let’s be honest; we think grandma just had tunnel vision because she was excited for a good meal, which basically makes her our hero!
