No matter how many times you do it, getting up on stage and singing in front of a crowd of people is never easy.
Stage fright is a very real thing, causing people to freeze up and lose their place when facing an audience of any size. No matter how prepared you might be, you just never know when your nervousness might take over. Next thing you know, you’re staring out blankly at that sea of faces, wishing you were somewhere else!

Rhonda Whitney of Colorado Springs, Colorado, witnessed stage fright firsthand when she was attending her daughter’s talent show. Now, her video of the moment is going viral, and when you see why, you’re pretty much guaranteed to tear up a little bit!
Rhonda was filming the talent show as a young girl took the stage to sing her song. It was clear from the start that she was nervous, but she forged on.

About a minute into the song, though, she starts to really falter. She pauses and puts out her hands in an “oh well” sort of way, and she seems doomed to stand up there in silence until the entire song has played.

Just when the moment reaches peak awkwardness, another voice can be heard loud and clear, off-stage. The audience cranes their necks to see who else is singing, and that’s when the little girl’s mother appears.

Shaye Washington had no doubt listened to her daughter practice her song over and over at home, so she knew the words and recognized that her daughter just needed a little help.

Fittingly, the song that Shaye’s girl was singing was “Rise Up” by Andra Day. The lyrics fit so well with this moment, as Mom “rose up” to help her daughter be unafraid!

I’ll rise unafraid
I’ll rise up
And I’ll do it a thousand times again.
“Come on, baby. You got it,” Shaye says as she takes the stage next to her daughter. The girl seems instantly bolstered by her mother’s presence, and before you know it she’s singing again. Shaye helps her get through it simply by standing alongside her, and the audience can’t help but cheer and shout words of encouragement.

“To the mom and daughter in this video: thank you for showing us all something so beautiful, and inspirational. In my eyes you won the talent show,” Rhonda wrote when she uploaded the video to Facebook.
