We may be socially distant right now, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate life’s big moments.
With the novel coronavirus postponing or even canceling important milestones like graduation and prom, parents like Darla Pool of Fresno, California, are coming up with new ways to recognize their teens’ accomplishments.
Darla explained that her daughter Katelyn has been feeling pretty blue about missing her senior year. After seeing a few parents decorate their front doors to honor their kids, Darla took the idea and ran with it!
“They’re getting ready for this new chapter and some of them, they might not see each other again,” Darla said. “I thought, ‘What a great way to give seniors the recognition they deserve.’”
After encouraging other families to get involved, Darla started decorating her own front door with memorabilia and other items to honor Katelyn’s hard work.
Soon, doors all over Fresno were decorated, and now the movement is in full swing nationwide! Many parents are also incorporating their students’ interests and talents into the designs.
Some are taking things even further by decorating their entire front porch or entryway!
At the end of the day, Darla hopes the decorated doors will give graduating teens a sense of solidarity. While their situations have changed, they can still celebrate!
“If I would’ve known March 13 was the last day of school, I would’ve taken pictures and hugged everyone a little tighter,” senior Miranda Jones said. “Decorating our doors was a way to connect all of us together, and to remind everyone that we are all in this together.”
One mom, Sheila Rumsey, took to Twitter to let her son know how proud she is: “Hunter Rumsey, you worked hard for 12 years. COVID-19 won’t stop us from celebrating you!”
We hope graduating seniors are feeling the love and support from around the world! We are so proud of you and all you’ve accomplished!
