Homeless Man’s Plea For His Dog Leads To Incredible Gift From Anonymous Donor.

A man who adopted an adorable cream-and-white pit bull earlier this year, returned to the Sacramento shelter a few months later. But wait, it’s not what you think.

When Robert adopted Meaty, he had a home, family, career, and a master’s degree. But after being evicted, he and his family found themselves homeless and searching for transitional housing. But few shelters accept animals, so Robert decided to camp out in his car with Meaty so his beloved dog wouldn’t be cold, alone, and anxious.

But the situation took its toll, so he came back to Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter with an unusual request: Could they find someone who’d be willing to foster Meaty until the family was back on its feet and in a stable housing situation?

The heart-wrenching video below caught the attention of the shelter’s manager, Gina Knepp, who was so touched by the family’s plight that she paid for several nights at a dog-friendly hotel.

In the meantime, shelter staff hoped the video would prompt someone to help the family out and open their doors to Meaty.

I think that pets are very important to homeless people. They really are. I mean, they’re their companion. They’re company, they watch their back, they’re an extra pair of eyes and ears … I came here with hopes that I could find a foster family (chokes up) to care for Meaty until we can get on our feet again …

Robert’s voice is choked with emotion as he talks, his love and desire to provide Meaty with as much comfort as possible almost tangible. The video’s been viewed and shared hundreds of thousands of times, in the weeks since, and it did, in fact, compel complete strangers to come to his aid.
